Technology at Rolling Meadows
Access to Technology
At Rolling Meadows we use technology throughout the school day to enhance student learning. In Grades 1-2 there are 4 chromebooks per class for use as a centre, in Grades 3-6 there is 1:2 technology, and in Grades 7-8 there is 1:1 technology.
Students are expected to use technology responsibly at all times. Our staff engage in ongoing education about the safe and responsible use of technology and how to be good digital citizens.
Many classes at Rolling Meadows utilize Google Classroom to organize their assignments. Parents are invited to access their child's Google Classroom to see what work has been posted and completed.
Cellphones & Personal Devices
Students in Grades 1 to 6 who bring cellphones to school are expected to leave them in their backpacks or in their lockers throughout the school day.
Students in Grades 7-8 are expected to leave their cell phones in their lockers, unless given explicit permission by their teacher to use their cell phone for a specific educational purpose. Please note that we have plenty of technology at school, and students will never be required to have their own device.
Students are responsible for all cell phones/personal devices that they bring to school. Students should have a lock on their locker at all times and should not share the combination with anyone other than their teacher and parent/guardian. Administration and teachers will attempt to help solve the problem of lost, broken, or stolen devices; however, replacement costs are the responsibility of the student who owns it.
Students are expected to leave their cell phones/personal devices in their lockers, unless given explicit permission by their teacher to use their device for a specific educational purpose (Grades 7-8 only).
Students are not permitted to use their cell phones/personal devices or school devices during nutrition breaks, during recess, in the hallways, or in washrooms.
Students who are observed using their cell phones/personal devices will be asked to return them to their locker. If it becomes a recurring concern, teachers will reach out to families for additional support.
Students should never take pictures, video, or audio recordings of students or staff during the school day unless prior approval has been set up as part of an educational assignment during which the teacher will be supervising.
If students need to get in touch with their families during the school day, they should ask their teacher for permission to come to the office to use the school phone. As well, we ask that families who need to get in touch with their children call the office, rather than texting their children during the school day. This helps tremendously to maintain a focused learning environment in the classroom.
Students must safeguard their passwords and not share them with anyone other than their teachers and parents/guardians. Students must also represent their online identity truthfully and only access their own accounts, information and systems.
Students must not post, publish or knowingly download any inappropriate content (e.g., illegal, dishonest, offensive, swearing, racially offensive, sexual, threatening material or content that promotes hatred or harm against any group or person) in the form of text, video, images or music
We ask parents/guardians to remind your children of the appropriate uses of technology and social media, while reviewing and monitoring their online activity outside of school hours.
